Welcome to Lyon, France

Bonjour, Friday, Aug 4

We arrived in Paris at 8:15 am on Wed. morning. We had a direct flight from Seattle to Paris via Air France which we would highly recommend. We were thankful to see our good friend John Kerl who had come to meet us and take us by train to their home in Lyon. Neither Eric nor I have traveled abroad so it would have been challenging for us to get off the plane and then have to navigate the train schedule or even know to have half a euro to pay to use the bathroom. The two hour train ride was so enjoyable as we visited and took in lovely scenery of rolling hills and small towns. Letha had lunch prepared for us when we arrived at their apartment. Our goal was to stay awake until 9:00 pm so as to adjust to the time change. This was a bit challenging but we did it. John and Letha's apartment overlooks the Rhone river. Last night we enjoyed dinner looking out over the river with the full moon rising above; absolutely beautiful.
A few facts about Lyon:
-The city is known for it's historical and architectural landmark
-It is the second largest city in France
-Known as the culinary capital of France
-Historically known as the silk capital of the world
-Established by the Romans
-Christians were persecuted for their religion under the reigns of various Roman emperors. It's awe inspiring and humbling to see the ruins of the arenas where Christians were put to death for sport.

Yesterday we toured the city on foot. I always enjoy people watching while taking in the sights. So far France is living up to our image of cobblestone narrow streets, numerous cafes, markets, coffee and pastries and history, history, history everywhere you look. It's awe inspiring to see ancient churches that are centuries old and built by hand. How do we take it all in???? Our goal is to enjoy whatever each day brings.

We are so thankful to be here! John and Letha are the perfect hosts. Next up a walk along the river to a beautiful park, a tour of the wine vinyards and, of course, dinner at an authentic French Restaurant.

On another note, the weather is perfect. It has cooled off significantly in the last few days; average temp. in the 70's and a bit overcast which makes it perfect for being out and about all day.

Au revoir et à la prochaine.... Kathy

What a wonderful way you have captured your first impressions of France! You've described it so beautifully, I feel as if we are there with you... Keep your eyes, ears, and hearts open to the things God has for you each day. Will look forward to following your adventures in future posts. Give our love to the Kerls! Much love, Michael and Sarah
